How to create llms.txt

A practical guide to creating llms.txt—what to include, where to host it, and how to generate a solid first draft in under a minute.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a small plain-text file at the root of your site (like a focused cousin of robots.txt). It tells AI agents which pages matter: docs, API, pricing, blog index—not every URL in your sitemap.

How to create llms.txt (manual)

  1. Create a UTF-8 text file named llms.txt.
  2. Start with # Your Site Name and a one-line > summary.
  3. Add a ## Key pages list using Markdown links: - [Title](https://…).
  4. Upload it so it is publicly reachable at https://your-domain/llms.txt.
  5. Optionally mention it from your docs homepage or README.

Recommended shape

# Your Product > One sentence on what the product does. ## Site - [Home](https://example.com/) ## Key pages - [Documentation](https://example.com/docs) - [API reference](https://example.com/api) - [Pricing](https://example.com/pricing) ## Optional - Contact: you@example.com
